A diabetes mellitus é uma doença endocrinológica que se caracteriza pela produção insuficiente do hormônio insulina, responsável por controlar a quantidade de glicose no sangue. Sua origem pode ser crônica ou decorrente de hábitos não saudáveis.
Quando a glicose ingerida não é bem metabolizada pelo organismo, tem-se então oscilações nas quantidades de açúcar no sangue, o que pode provocar quadros de hiper ou hipoglicemia, comprometendo o funcionamento do pâncreas e por consequência, levando a outras complicações de saúde, principalmente se o tratamento não for seguido.
A diabetes pode ser classificada em dois tipos:
Tipo relacionado a fatores genéticos, que levam à redução ou à ausência total na produção das células betas pancreáticas, responsáveis pela produção de insulina no organismo. É considerada a forma crônica da doença.
A administração de alguns medicamentos também pode levar à Diabetes tipo 1.
Já a Diabetes tipo 2, ocorre devido a uma resistência do organismo à insulina, e é mais comum entre os bichanos. Neste caso, não há uma falta na produção das células, mas elas não atuam direito no transporte da glicose, o que cria a chamada resistência insulínica.
Sua causa está relacionada principalmente à obesidade e a um estilo de vida sedentário.
As causas da diabetes felina, seja tipo 1 ou 2, são variadas. Confira algumas possíveis:
– Uso de medicamentos, principalmente corticoides;
– Predisposição genética;
– Vida sedentária;
– Obesidade;
– Modificações hormonais decorrentes do cio;
– Outras doenças endócrinas, como o hipertireoidismo.
Vale ressaltar que apesar da obesidade ser um grande fator de risco para a diabetes em gatos, animais magros também não estão livres de desenvolver a doença.
Quando se trata dos gatos, estar atento a qualquer mudança, mesmo que mínima de comportamento, pode ser o grande diferencial na percepção de sintomas. Isso porque os bichanos possuem uma grande facilidade de não demonstrar quando estão doentes.
Os sinais que geralmente indicam que o gato está sofrendo de diabetes, são:
– Urinar em excesso (poliúria);
– Sede e fome excessivas:
– Perda de peso;
– Letargia (cansaço);
– Vômitos;
– Infecções no trato urinário;
– Respiração ofegante;
– Pelos secos, ralos e sem brilho;
– Olhos opacos.
Caso perceba qualquer sintoma ou conjunto de sintomas citados acima, leve o seu bichano ao veterinário o mais rápido possível.
Para diagnosticar corretamente a diabetes, será necessário que o gato passe por uma bateria de exames, incluindo:
– Exame de glicemia (para detecção da quantidade de açúcar presente no sangue);
– Hemograma;
– Ultrassonografia;
– Perfil bioquímico sérico;
– Exame de urina.
Somente por meio desses exames, é possível identificar a gravidade da diabetes e optar por um tratamento eficaz. Por mais estressante que seja para o gato, realizar essa série de exames é vital para que a diabetes seja identificada corretamente.
A partir do diagnóstico confirmado, inicia-se então o tratamento da diabetes felina. Para frear a doença, o gatinho precisará de cuidados especiais. A seguir, confira os fatores que fazem parte do tratamento, e como fica a rotina do bichano:
Um dos pilares fundamentais para que o tratamento seja bem-sucedido. A insulinoterapia consiste na aplicação de insulina por meio de seringas ou canetas aplicadoras. Tanto a frequência quanto a quantidade ideal a ser administrada serão definidas pelo médico veterinário.
Realizar o monitoramento dos níveis de glicemia no sangue por meio de aparelhos de medição específicos, também é importante para o acompanhamento da doença.
A frequência e o modo como o sangue do gato deve ser colhido, também serão definidos pelo médico veterinário. Registre os dados referentes a cada checagem e apresente-os a cada nova consulta.
Outro pilar fundamental, sobretudo se o gato sofrer com obesidade. A nova dieta do felino diabético será à base de rações específicas, que tenham um baixo nível de carboidratos e alto teor proteico, através de porções fracionadas. Também é essencial garantir que o gatinho ingira muita água.
Quando pensamos em uma rotina saudável, é inevitável pensarmos em exercícios físicos, para evitar o sedentarismo. Com os bichanos não será diferente.
Mais uma vez, o médico veterinário irá recomendar uma série de atividades físicas, personalizadas de acordo com as necessidades do animal, tudo para ajudar no controle metabólico e queima de calorias.
Por fim, é preciso estar atento à realização de check-ups periódicos para o acompanhamento da doença.

Incentive o pet a se movimentar e gastar energia. Invista em brinquedos e uma rotina menos sedentária. Quanto mais cedo o animal começar a praticar exercícios físicos, menor é a chance que ele se torne obeso ou venha a desenvolver diabetes e outras doenças.
Poucos pets resistem a um petisco, mas se o seu desejo é manter o bichano saudável, evite dar comidas muito calóricas a ele.
